Writing captions that actually land

Caption style is the cheapest conversion lever you have. Here is what changes when you treat it seriously.

Captions are the highest-leverage thing most creator accounts get wrong, and they cost almost nothing to fix.

Read it without sound first

Watch your content muted. If the idea does not survive, the caption has to carry it, and most captions are written for people who are already listening.

Three styles that work

Hook-first. Say the payoff in the first two words, then the context. This converts best on short-form.

Continuity. Picks up mid-thought, assumes the viewer has seen yesterday's. This builds the strongest feed for a regular audience.

Direct address. Names the viewer and their situation. Strongest for selling, weakest for retention if overused.

The specifics that matter

  • Two lines maximum before a cut, or the eye gives up
  • One highlighted word per line, not four
  • Consistent positioning, or it reads as an accident
  • Read every caption aloud once before posting

What to measure

Watch retention past three seconds against caption style, not against total views. Views tell you the hook worked. Retention tells you the caption did.
