A rating is only useful if it is hard to fake. That constraint shapes how this marketplace works.
Reviews require a real interaction
You can only review someone if you applied to one of their listings, they applied to one of yours, or you share a team. This is enforced in code, not by asking people to be honest. Drive-by ratings are structurally impossible.
That means the number means something
When a listing says a freelancer averages 4.8 across nineteen engagements, that is nineteen real working relationships. It is not a testimonial page anyone could have written themselves. In our experience that is the single most predictive thing on a listing.
It changes what you can charge
Rates move with reputation, but slowly, and the mechanism is boring: people with a track record get invited to things that require one. Consistency compounds. Someone who has worked reliably for two years is offered the retainer work that someone with an identical portfolio and no history is not.
A note on retaliation
Retaliatory reviews are grounds for removal. If you receive a review that reads like a scorecard for a disagreement rather than a description of work, report it and a moderator will look at the engagement.
